Green for 2017 – Pantone Colour of the Year

The announcement in December of ‘Greenery’ as the Pantone colour of the year for 2017 is a strong departure from the soft and calming hues of ‘Rose Quartz’ and ‘Serenity’ seen in 2016.

However ‘Greenery’ brings an alternative relaxation, the type induced by the calmness of nature, light green grass and sunlit leaves, adding an optimistic touch to the natural relaxing quality of green.

Such a fresh and vibrant colour is perfect for kitchens as there are so many different surfaces to inject colour onto. Walls, splashbacks, cabinetry and doors are great places to go green. Here the client chose a green glass splashback to make a bold statement in this kitchen.

Combined with neutral colours, the green becomes an accent colour, adding subtle drama without dominating the space. When used as the main hue throughout the scheme, it is best not to introduce too many other colours to ensure the most elegant and timeless execution.

Greenery is perfect for prints too and we have seen jungle prints in a mix of green florals and foliage flooding interiors over the past few seasons. In this project above, the greenery from the feature wall is accented on the walls throughout this kitchen and as described as ‘natures neutral’ by Pantone, it’s a shade that can be paired with neutrals, brights, deeper shades, pastels and metallics – all of which can be seen above to create a beautiful vibrant space.

When executed properly green can enhance the core whites and earth tones in your design. A touch of Greenery in wall colour beautifully accents the core neutrals.

Don’t forget to include natural green elements too. Incorporate fresh floral sprays, vegetables, leafy arrangements and ferns in your kitchen and bath designs. Even subtle injections of green through crockery, table linen or towels will instantly invigorate the space.

Pantone also notes that “Greenery is nature’s neutral.” It’s a lively hue that can’t help but channel exploration, innovation, health and more, making it a natural fit for the kitchen and dining room for the New Year.

Tile Trends 2016

Patterned Tiles

Patterned tiles are becoming more and more popular on both walls and floors. A patterned tile can bring even a monochrome scheme to life and offers so many options when designing. Bathrooms and kitchens are full of straight lines and hard surfaces so adding in a bit of pattern is a great way to bring some softness into the space and a bit of personality! Our favourite monochrome patterned tile at the moment is xxx or for the more daring, the Patchwork Multicolour tiles from Ca’Pietra can create the most amazing feature wall or floor.

 Creative Layouts

For something just as original but more subtle, get creative with your tile layout. Usually a stacked or bricked layout is standard, but there are plenty of other ways to display your tiles. Try stacking metro tiles long ways on top of one another or create a staggered finish instead of a straight line.

A contemporary Herringbone layout has become increasingly popular and many companies now offer herringbone tiles such as these marble effect mosaics from Fired Earth, or for ultimate luxury opt for the Neptune Kennet Carrara Marble Herringbone tiles on your walls or floor.

Geometric Tiles

Also in the Neptune Kennet range are these beautiful Carrara marble Hexagon shaped mosaic tiles, another top tile trend for this year. This latest trend incorporate shapes that are more irregular and geometric in tessellating designs. Hexagons, rhombuses and triangles are all proving popular shapes and are an easy way to update your kitchen or bathroom scheme. A larger tile works well in bathrooms to create a feature wall or floor where as a smaller geometric mosaic can create a subtle hint of style on a splashback.

Textured Tiles

Walls have started to become more interesting in their textures too. Textured tiles add visual interest to a room and can bring a tactile element into what can be a stark, clean space. With finishes often mimicking natural materials such as stone and rock, a textured tile can transform your bathroom into a spa like sanctuary.

AW16 Kitchen & Bathroom Trends

Within the design industry, September is the month for looking at trends. With London Design Festival, Decorex, London Fashion Week among others all based around next seasons trends, it is a great time to re-look at what’s coming up this season. Here are our top trends for Autumn Winter 16.

Brassware is Back

Golds, coppers and brass have been a big hit in interiors for the past couple of years and it is now making its way into kitchens and bathrooms too. Once dominated by chrome and nickel, everything from shower heads to kitchen taps are being replaced by this warmer metal. Brass is often seen as a metal used for more traditional kitchens and bathrooms but it adds a beautiful twist to a contemporary scheme too.

The richness of brass is perfect for warming up a white marble scheme in a bathroom or to add style and substance to a kitchen.

Mix with Metallics

Similarly, metallic finishes are still key. Although, this time a pared back approach has become more popular, with brushed metal and satin finishes taking over from the gleaming, shiny metallic surfaces of last year. Here the tarnished metallic splash back, matt worktops and satin finish cabinetry come together to create a softer finish that would be at home in both a traditional or contemporary setting. Similar tiles can also create a stunning feature wall in a bathroom.

Go Dark

Alongside all these metallic’s, a block dark colour will really show off the finish. Colours such as navy blue or charcoal grey, as used in this recent project above, create a cosy atmosphere, perfect for a dark winter’s evening. In bathrooms a deep blue or teal will work well, particularly when paired with grey and white tiles to create a calming Mediterranean feel.
