Making The Most Of Your Large Kitchen

The size of your kitchen will directly impact how easy it is to renovate. Small kitchens are known for being difficult to design and when you don’t have much floor space, you can be quite restricted when it comes to things such as the layout. However, having a large kitchen can be equally as challenging to design. The more floor space you have, the harder it can be to design a warm and welcoming kitchen, and lots of homeowners struggle to make the most of their spacious rooms. To help anyone interested in renovating their large kitchen, our designers have put together some useful tips to inspire your home improvement project.

Install a kitchen island

Kitchen islands have been popular for a few decades now and they are a brilliant feature to have in any large kitchen. Not only are kitchen islands multi-purpose, providing you with additional worktop space and storage space, but they can prevent a big room from looking empty. More often than not, islands are installed in the centre of a kitchen and they are a brilliant focal point. It’s worth pointing out that an island can make your kitchen a more sociable space as well.

Create a dining area

Instead of installing a kitchen island, or in addition to the island if you have enough space, you should consider creating a dining area in your kitchen. Open-plan living has been on-trend for a while now and it’s expected to remain popular for many years to come. Having a dining table in your kitchen will take up a fair amount of space and it can make the room feel more homely. Of course, this table will be really useful for both family meal times and dinner parties too.

Play around with colour

Homeowners with small kitchens are frequently told to use light colour schemes to make the room seem more spacious and this can be very effective. If you have a large kitchen, you can be more experimental with colour though and you don’t have to stick to white or neutral colour schemes. Dark kitchens are very trendy at the moment and you should consider using colours like navy blue and emerald green in your kitchen design instead. These colours can help to give the space some personality and character.

Experiment with living room furniture

More so than ever before, homeowners are bringing armchairs and sofas into their kitchens, and creating relaxed seating areas. If you spend a lot of time in your kitchen, having a small living space can be advantageous and it will provide your family and friends with somewhere to sit whilst you’re cooking too. You can use other pieces of furniture that are traditionally found in the living room in your kitchen as well, such as coffee tables and ottomans.

Use plenty of artificial light

Even if you have exterior doors with huge panes of glass in your kitchen, it is likely that the natural light won’t fill the space. To prevent your kitchen from having dingy corners, make sure you’re installing lots of artificial light. The right lighting can completely transform a kitchen and make it a brighter and more inviting space. It’s beneficial to mix lighting styles in large kitchens, for example, you could have spotlights in the ceiling, strip lights under your cabinets and hanging pendant lights above your kitchen island/dining table.
